Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A wide, round mold-made pottery lamp with a short spout and a ring handle. The discus has two small pour holes and a wide, finely rendered and highly detailed depiction of Neptune riding a chariot of shell, holding a trident, and with four horses drawing him forward. On the inset disc base, there is a maker's mark that depicts three wheat sheaves. This is an excellent example with very fine details. Perhaps this design was issued to celebrate the Neptunalia, the festival of July 23 celebrating the god. Size: 4.6" L x 3.5" W x 2.2" H (11.7 cm x 8.9 cm x 5.6 cm)
