Description
A nice Roman oil lamp with an arena scene involving a gladiator and lions, c. 2nd Century AD, the interesting scene within the discus depicts combat between a heavily armored and armed fighter spearing a leaping lion before him, another three lions around and a spear on the ground between his legs. The shoulder is adorned with a laurel-wreath, the nozzle short and rounded, ring handle decorated with lines and a low ring foot with concentric circles within. L: 4 2/5 in (11.3cm). A rare lamp with a dynamic scene, light mineral deposits and remnants of dark brown slip. Ex collection of William Major Tedder.
