Partially printed signed document dated May 4, 1789, being a permit for John Swan to keep an inn or tavern. 7.5" x 6". Moderately toned with some light chips to edges, with four tape repairs to verso, faint horizontal crease. *********************** Signed by James Duane as mayor of New York. Duane was a Revolutionary leader who served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and was a signer of the Articles of Confederation. After the British evacuation from New York city in 1784, Duane was appointed and served as mayor until 1789. He would later be appointed as one of the nation's first federal judges on the US Circuit Court in New York.
