Item Details
Description
Colonial American summons, order to pay, signed in acknowledgement by James Wilson ("Wilson") on verso. Single leaf, 8" x 6.5". Vertical crease and tear, discreet tissue repair to verso at lower portion of crease, light traces of glue along crease, small hole near center (also at crease), small chip near upper margin just holding and a couple of very short marginal tears, moderate toning. ****************************** Legal document from Cumberland County (PA) ordering Philip Tabor to pay John Wilson a sum of eight pounds. Signed by Turbutt Francis (Justice of the Peace) and signed by James Wilson on verso in acknowledgement. James Wilson was an attorney who set up his practice in Carlisle, PA in 1767. His practice met with great success and he handled cases in eight local counties, including Cumberland. Having read law at the practice of John Dickinson, and given his success in his own practice, it would be no surprise that he would serve as a member of the Continental Congress in 1776. Wilson is known as one of the most learned framers of the U. S. Constitution.
