Description
Manuscript on single folded leaf from Antonio Cocchi (letter written in third person) to Antonio Francesco Gori. Manuscript to recto only, with red wax seal. Leaf measures 13" x 9", contains 15 lines of text, dated 1735. Several creases and some soiling, chip to one corner (no loss), Very Good. *********************************** A letter to Gori in which Cocchi requests the third volume of an unspecified work to be delivered to him straight from the press. Gori authored many works as did Cocchi, and this pair of Italian antiquaries were known to be associated. The pair collaborated in what most would consider to be the macabre treatment of Galileo's remains when he was exhumed in 1737; Cocchi and Gori took it upon themselves to keep a relic from Galileo's skeleton. Gori took the right forefinger and thumb, and Cocchi took the fifth lumbar vertebra (which is still preserved in the Science Hall of the Padua University.) Antonio Cocchi (1695-1758) was an Italian physician, naturalist and writer (among other things.) Cocchi-related manuscript material is quite scarce, and we locate no previous auction appearances of this type. Scarce.
