French compound microscope in mahogany slip-case, probably by "Secretan, Paris", lacquered and oxidized brass, ebonized foot, mahogany board as limb, draw tube, milled-head screw fine adjustment to the table, pinhole diaphragm, bull's-eye lens missing glass, 1 objective, 1 ocular, in unusual slip-case, height 10 ½ in., c. 1860. – Literature: Similar instrument illustrated in Secretan's 1853 catalog as "Nouveau microscope d'Amphithéâtre".
