Description
Rare Rookwood carved mat glaze vase with lotus blossom decoration and electroplated copper leaves done in 1901 by Kataro Shirayamadani. All the flowers and leaves are applied and in deep relief after which, the leaves and feet are electroplated with copper. The electroplating was done at Rookwood, either by Shirayamadani or by his legendary friend, E.H. Asano. Marks include the company logo, the date, shape number 408 Z and Shirayamadani's faint cypher. Height is 11 inches. There are very minor firing separations on the underside due to the application of thick leaves, flowers and feet but all are in the making and a very faint, tight line at the rim.
