This is one of the best known early maps of Tierra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan. Discovered by Ferdinand Magellan in 1520, the strait offers a protected passage around the bottom of South America, an area buffeted by near-constant storms. From the Mercator-Hondius work, Atlas Sive Cosmographicae Meditationes.
