Size: 15 x 19 1/2 inches (engraved surface excluding margins)

The rare English text edition. A richly decorative map of some of the remotest Spice Islands, sought primarily as the sources of cloves, one of the most valuable spices during the 17th century. The map is oriented with north to the right. The islands depicted on the map are located along the west coast of the large island of Halmahera in the far eastern part of Indonesia. The verso text describes the spices to be had from the Moluccas, the climate and productivity of the islands, and the religious behavior of the natives there. It also alludes to the risks attendant on those Europeans who venture there: "[The Spice Islands] are very unhealthfull for many marchants dye in them, who prefer their gaine before their owne lives."
