Description
This antique map, created by R. Bonne and Raynal between 1775 and 1780, provides a detailed depiction of North America. Alaska is depicted as a group of islands, and while the western areas appear empty, numerous coastal cities are named across the continent. Part of "Histoire Philosophique et Politique des Etablissemens," a significant work from the Age of Enlightenment with contributions from Diderot, this map addresses various controversial topics, such as religion, commerce, slavery, and contemporary political and social issues. Due to its provocative content, the publication was banned in France and subsequently published in Geneva, Switzerland. Engraved using copperplate, this map is in overall very good condition, with authenticity guaranteed. It measures 14 1/2" x 9 1/2".
