Description
This antique map, crafted by R. Bonne and Raynal between 1775 and 1780, presents the world in a double-hemisphere projection. Notable features include Alaska depicted as a group of islands, Tasmania attached to Australia, and the absence of Antarctica. Published as part of "Histoire Philosophique et Politique des Etablissemens," this map is a significant contribution to the Age of Enlightenment. The work, which included contributions from Diderot, raised questions and addressed issues concerning religion, commerce, slavery, and contemporary political and social matters. Such controversial topics led to the banning of the publication in France, prompting its publication in Geneva, Switzerland. Crafted through copperplate engraving, this map is presented in overall very good condition, with authenticity guaranteed. It measures 17 1/2" x 9 3/4".
