Size: 6.4 X 9.7 in.

This a beautiful double-hemispheric seldom seen compact world map by Vaughan. It is one of the first maps to show California as an island. The coastline in North America around past California is mostly blank. The Straits of Magellan are inaccurately shown. The Southerne Unknowne Land shows the large continent covering much of the southern hemisphere – a combination of Australia and Antarctica of today. North East Asia isn’t fully explored yet by Westerners and consequently Kamchatka is largely missing and Japan is misshaped. This highly decorative map is surrounded by famous explorers of the day (Cavendish, van der Noort, Drake and Magellan), the eclipse of the sun and moon, and allegorical representations of Water, Earth, Air and Fire. The map is beautifully engraved, and is from Sir Francis Drake's The World Encompassed, first published in 1628. To create this map, Vaughan compiled in part, in a reduced form, J Speed's work of his world map. Handwritten notes on verso in ink.
