Size: 14.75 x 19.25 inches

This map depicts the vital area of South America that contains the mouths of two great rivers-the Amazon and the Orinoco. The map extends from the Gulf of Paria in Venezuela in the north and includes in this area the islands of Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada and Margarita. Its southern limit is Sao Luis in northeastern Brazil, and it encompasses the entire mouth of the Amazon. Also on the map are Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, and the Guiana Highlands. This example appeared in the 1636 edition of the Hondius/Janssonius atlas, the only one printed with English text. The verso text describes the physical geography of the region, the customs of the natives, as well as the produce, flora and fauna.
