A semi-circular shaped wooden dance crest with inset seeds. Nigeria, Koro. 20th century. 16"h x 11"w.
Provenance: Inventory and Collection from the Estate of Merton D. Simpson.
Simpson inventory #9418. Acquired May 29, 2003. Simpson archives: insured for $3,000.
Catalog Notes: The Islamized Koro people in the Kafanchan plateau in Central Nigeria are known for their abstracted, nonrepresentational dance crests. The headdresses are used in dances and masquerades celebrating planting and harvesting. The crest is placed on a dancer's head and tentlike robes then cover the dancer.
