Royal Boch (1841-1985)

Founded by Eugène and Victor Boch in 1841, a family of ceramists since the 18th century from Audun-le-Tische, the first manufactory was settled in La Louvière as la Société Keramis. The special design of the Boch manufactory was honored with the gold medal of the Exposition des produits de l’industrie belge in 1847. In 1855, the participation at the Exposition universelle des Paris followed. At the time, the manufactory employed 300 people in La Louvière as well as 100 more at a factory on Tournai, which was bought up by Henri de Bettignies in 1851. Since 1870, the manufactory made use of a special body from Great Britain. The manufactory had to downsize due to the circumstances of the Second World War, focused on sanitary products and were renamed in Novoboch in 1985. The company had to fully close by 2011.

Charles Catteau (1880-1966)

Charles Catteau was hired by Royal Boch as a draftsman of the creation and painting of the décors in 1906. Shortly after, he became the director of the department of decorations. The department was renamed in Atelier de Fantasie in 1920. Catteau worked at Boch Frères until 1954. He leaves behind a comprehensive body of work of Art Deco objects. (tm)
