Description:
Color lithograph poster. Initialed W.H. in the stone. 110x68 cm (43¼x26¾"), mounted on modern linen backing.
Rare recruiting poster for French Canadians, showing Marianne, personification of France, reaching out, as a cathedral burns under artillery attack. The poster was commissioned by Lieutenant Colonel René Arthur Girouard, who had enlisted in the 22nd Battalion in October 1914, and after being wounded by shrapnel he returned to Canada where he was given command of the 178th Battalion. OCLC/Worldcat lists only two examples, at the Library of Congress and the Pritzker Military Library.
Condition
A few old creases and short tears repaired when backed, outer border retouched in places; very good.
