Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Oaxaca, Mixtec culture, Early Postclassic, ca. 1000 to 1250 CE. This is a raised elaborate tripod vessel with an incised pattern in tondo, well-decorated with lavish sea life motifs and geometric and floral patterns around the exterior. Although many are abstract, there is clearly a fish and some kind of animal with wide open, sharp-tooth-lined jaws. The tripod feet have spiral patterns. The rim is decorated with a ring of creatures, all with a multitude of eyes. Although the Mixtec lived in an inland, mountainous area, we know that they had a strong coast-highland trade route connection to other cultures, especially during this period. This may have inspired the designs of water creatures. Size: 8.5" W x 11.5" H (21.6 cm x 29.2 cm)
