Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A carved brown stone votive figural mace head, in a nice speckled stone with cream and black elements, with a hollow cylindrical socket and a long, pointed butt. The other end is a head in the form of a bird with huge eyes and a pronounced beak. The socket has elonged rectangular tips. Overall the shape seems to be a hummingbird, an animal that we know from at least Aztec lore was an important part of Mesoamerican mythology. Huitzilopochtli (huitzilin means "hummingbird" in Nahuatl) was the Aztec god of war. This worship may have extended as far south as Costa Rica. A well-formed and interesting piece! Size: 6.2" L x 1.5" W (15.7 cm x 3.8 cm)
