Description
Ulua Valley, or Petan Ca. 500 to 800 AD. Deep cylindrical vessel on three raised tripod legs in cream painted pigment and with a schematic hieroglyphic band (primary standard sequence?) incised on the diagonal along exterior. Size 5-3/4 inches H. Provenance: Ex collection of S Kaufman, a Harvard educated lawyer who specialized in bringing suits on behalf of corporations' disgruntled stockholders, died in 1993 at the age of 81. He was a staff attorney with the Securities and Exchange Commission before World War II, then served in the Army in Europe and rose to captain. In 1946 he became a founding partner in his law firm, Kaufman Malchman, Kaufmann & Kirby, which had branches in NYC and Los Angeles. He and his wife, S Rampoldt, were avid collectors of Pre-Columbian art throughout the 60s and early 70s, and lived on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. 15581
