Description
Pre-Columbian, Chimu, Peru, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. This is a delightful pair of blackware jars. One of them is round, with a raised lizard design on the shoulder. The other is ovoid, with a wide mouth and a bird form -- the bird looks like it might be waterfowl from the way it is sitting. These blackware jars were mould-made and fired to that black color using a method called reduction firing. The original clay color was red. These were produced in specialty workshops by trained artisans. Size of largest (bird): 9.75" L x 6" W x 6" H (24.8 cm x 15.2 cm x 15.2 cm)
