Description
This British military helmet consists of black leather with a band of spotted fur along the rim and a long tuft of black and brown fur across the center from back to front. Brass chains fasten the fur to the sides of the helmet with a medallion stating "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" which translates to "Shame on whosoever things badly of it."

Condition: Cracking of the leather, matting of the fur along the sides, patina on the brass as well as some dinging and denting to the plate declaring the helmet a part of the Somerset Yeomanry.
History: Though created and put into service in the early parts of the 1800s, the primary use of the North Somerset Yeomanry came in the early 20th Century with the advent of the Second Boer War and World War One. Previously, the cavalry regiment had been used in riot suppression and dispersal, with a clause that stated they would not be used overseas. This came to an end in 1899. Throughout World War One, they were used as home defense, but were largely outmatched due to the ineffectiveness of cavalry in the trench warfare setting.
