Greece, ca. 449 to 413 BCE. Perhaps the most famous of all ancient coins! Solid silver tetradrachm showing head of Athena wearing Corinthian helmet on obverse, owl standing right, olive branch and crescent above. 17.17 grams, 25.45 mm (1 inch).
Athens was the center of Greek culture in the 5th century BCE. These are the coins that were issued to pay the artists and stone-cutters who built the Parthenon and the armies of Athens in its disastrous war against Sparta.
