Description
Bactria-Margiana (BMAC), modern day central Asia, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. This is a small, round, bronze openwork stamp, cast with a cross design that resembles a four-sided tree with small, symmetrical branches reaching off of each side; this design is hollow, with a small, square-handle on the obverse. This item would have been used to form a seal, dipped in wax. They are sometimes known as "compartmented" seals, and were cast both in geometric (like this one) and figural patterns; they are distinctive to this region. See a similar example at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC. Size: 1.8" W (4.6 cm)
