Oceania, Papua New Guinea, probably Middle Sepik River region, late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautifully carved and painted figural head representing a spirit and/or ancestor, boasting a characteristically elongated form and finely delineated visage with bold features including protruding hemispherical eyes and a long, straight nose, the surfaces painted with stylized concentric circular motifs in orange and cream hues. A wonderful sculptural work from this spiritually rich island culture on a square, black mount. Size: 5.25" W x 15.5" H (13.3 cm x 39.4 cm); 18.25" H (46.4 cm) on stand
