Description
Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River, late 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a carved wood "food hook", that is guaranteed not a tourist piece! A (female?) figure, painted red with cream and black details, she stands with her hands on her hips, dressed in cowry shells and body art, perched atop a hook with eye-like designs that call to mind the ceremonial items of the yam festivals that this area is known for. Elaborate hooks like this one were used to preserve food; both by hanging them and by calling upon the spirit they believe is within them to slow spoilage. Size: 8.25" W x 23.6" H (21 cm x 59.9 cm)
