Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche I, ca. 200 CE. An impressive early Moche, Moche I to be precise, portrait vessel presenting a naturalistic visage comprised of almond-shaped eyes, protruding nose and ears, a closed mouth with slightly parted lips, and a bichrome red on cream finish perhaps indicative of face paint. Scholars have proposed that the Moche were the only ancients of the Americas who produced such naturalistic portrait vessels. Examples like this have made it possible to follow the progression of age and rank of several of individuals portrayed in pottery. The subjects were actual individuals, in a way celebrities, who lived among the Moche. Size: 5.75" W x 8.125" H (14.6 cm x 20.6 cm)
