Johann Fischer was born in Austria in 1919 and raised on his family's farm. In 1961, following a series of delusional episodes which began in the late 1950s, he was committed to Klosterneuburg Hospital, near Vienna, for psychiatric treatment. During his institutionalization and eventual association with the Gugging and the Haus der Kunstler, both associated with the hospital, Fischer began drawing and ultimately achieved considerable acclaim. His works have sold internationally.
