Description
Graphite and colored pencil drawing on fine wove drawing paper, possibly a study for a larger work or painting, attributed* to Rene Magritte (1898-1967). Signed lower right and dated 1961. 6 x 8 inches. Very good condition. Unframed for inspection and shipping.
Provenance: Acquired by the former owner from his good friends, Charles Hathaway and his partner Hubert de Saint Senoch (1913-1983), Paris, sometime after 1965. Bequeathed thereafter to the current owner, circa 1995. Hubert de Saint Senoch was an important French collector (see, for example, Sotheby's sales 1983 and 1992) and presumably acquired the drawing directly from the artist.
* This lot is being offered as attributed to the named artist. The attribution is based in part on our careful study and does not represent the opinion of any recognized expert or panel of experts.
