Description
HISTORICAL JOHN BROWN TANWARE MONEY BANK, manganese-slip decoration, miniature jug form inscribed in deep cobalt script "The only / John Brown / Embalming / Fluid" flanking and below coin slot, "Pea / Ridge." to reverse, and manganese "Made / on Pea Rig" under base. Handle loss before firing with slip over scars. Possibly Pea Ridge, Arkansas. Circa 1880. 4" H, 3 3/8" D base.
Shallow chip to right side of mouth, minute flake to front of mouth.


Catalogue Note: This bank was likely produced as a souvenir for a reunion of the 1862 Civil War battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas. The first reunion held for the battle occurred in 1887 on the 25th anniversary of the event. The 1889 reunion was the first to include both Confederate and Union Veterans, drawing over 7,000 people.
