A large cast bronze Han Dynasty pole axe with a lengthy dual-edged blade, a pronounced blood ridge on both faces, each ridge punctuated by an attractive circular motif at the lower end, two piercings at the hu, an angled guard, and a rectangular nei with an open center and lovely spiraled motifs at the termini. This fine example comes to us from the esteemed collection of ancient weaponry and bronzes from the late expert John Piscopo. During his lifetime, Mr. Piscopo amassed an impressive ensemble of swords, knives, axes, daggers, and other weapons from ancient Greece, Rome, the Middle East, China, Southeast Asia, and many other lands. A knowledgeable connoisseur with a keen eye, Mr. Piscopo understood how to discern between reproductions and authentic weaponry. Given the vast number of fakes on the market offered to unsuspecting collectors, Mr. Piscopo took special care to assure that his collection only included genuine pieces.
