[Presidents/First Ladies] Retirement poster for Rex Scouten signed by 5 Presidents (Ford to Clinton) and 6 First Ladies. Eight of the eleven signatures are inscribed, as follows: Inscribed by Gerold Ford just below center: “To our dear friend, Rex. With our deepest appreciation for your many kindnesses and with highest admiration for your superb service./ Gerald R. Ford.” Signed by Betty Ford below that. At lower right: “With Thanks and Best wishes to our friend, Rex Scouten/ Jimmy Carter.” Signed by Rosalynn Carter below her husband's inscription. Inscribed by Nancy Reagan at upper right: “To our dear, dear Rex who made our life so much easier and steered me by a lot of pot-holes- You’re the best! With my love, Nancy Reagan.” Signed by Ronald Reagan just below that. Just right of center: “To Rex/ with the greatest of respect and admiration/ George Bush.” In right margin: “Rex- Both of us are glad that we were on your watch. Retiring was too much for you and you guarded the people’s house and still made it a house. – Barbara Bush.” Inscribed by Bill Clinton right of center: “To Rex- with thanks for your long selfless service to your country, especially your kindness and help to Hillary and me/ Bill Clinton.” Right margin: “Dear Rex- you’re one of the treasures of the White House- and the country- as well as an invaluable friend and counselor/ Hillary Rodham Clinton.” Inscribed by Lady Bird Johnson at lower left (slight smearing of ink, probably shortly after Lady Bird Johnson inscribed the poster). Each signature appears near a printed illustration of the President or First Lady, and Scouten’s port is printed near the center. Sheet 19 ¾ x 23 7/8 in. Mounted on blue paper (probably shortly before or after Scouten received the poster). Not examined out of frame. Accompanied by a printed table on the letterhead of William H. Perkins, Jr. (in Riverside, IL), providing the date when he sent the poster to most of the Presidents and First Ladies and the date when Perkins got the poster back: sent to Lady Bird Johnson June 24, 1997. Last date listed is George Bush, Nov. 24, 1997. Several dates omitted from the table. Printed in lower margin is a note stating that “President Carter signed while Mrs. Carter was attending to her mother’s illness… sent back to Mrs. Carter for her signature.” Provenance: Rex Scouten Collection of White House Americana.
