Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, San Sebastian, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A superb and large example of a San Sebastian Red type female figure, seated on a two-footed stool so as to signify her elite status. Nude except for her shell-like earrings, she leans forward dramatically, with hands held to her hips and her feet firmly planted on the ground, exuding a powerful presence. The sculptor envisioned this figure with an elongated head, full cheeks, jutting forehead, and a visage that projects a focussed countenance with half-closed eyes and an open slit mouth. She dons an incised hairstyle that falls down her back with a hooded effect typical of his Nayarit subtyle. Her ample hips, buttocks, and pronounced breasts positioned just beneath her armpits as was customary of such figures denotes her fertile state. What's more, remains of wax-resist designs on her body signify scarification or tattooing. A fabulous example of this San Sebastian red ware type that was found on both sides of the Nayarit-Jalisco border. Size: 7.25" W x 17.25" H (18.4 cm x 43.8 cm)
