Pre-Columbian, west Mexico, Jalisco, Ameca Style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a terracotta vessel depicting a seated hunchback leaning forward with legs bent at the knees, diminutive arms, an elongated face in the Ameca style, large ear ornaments, and a crossed headband. The figure is painted red and cream and has a wide, round opening on his back. The Ameca style is characterized by an elongated face and a high forehead capped by a turban-like piece of headgear. The eyes are a perfect example of this style -- wide and staring, with added strips of clay (fillets) around them as exaggerated eyelids. Hunchbacks make frequent appearances in the art of the shaft tomb cultures of West Mexico -- it seems that they were thought of as powerful, shamanic figures.
