Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala, ca. 300 BCE. An extremely large and substantive carved greenstone Mezcala standing anthropomorphic figure, displaying traits of type M-22 which according to expert Carlo Gay, "exemplify the result of the gradual changes undergone by the Mezcala style over a long period of time, and emphasize the subtle evolutionary process with a more descriptive form of sculpture." (Carlo Gay, Mezcala Ancient Stone Sculpture from Guerrero Mexico. New York: Balsas Publications, 1992 p. 89) Indeed by this point in Mezcala sculptural evolution, according to Gay, artisans displayed more advanced abilities to capture the human physiognomy with far greater expression and definition, i.e. the jutting nose and mouth, deep and curved orbital cavities, broad jaws, and accentuated cheekbones. Beyond these advances, the stone of this figure displays fabulous coloration with its russet and white mottled inclusions. An incredibly beautiful, large, and rare example. Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: 3" L x 3.5" W x 7.25" H (7.6 cm x 8.9 cm x 18.4 cm); 7.625" H on stand
