Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Vicus, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A hollow, redware terracotta stirrup spout vessel in the form of a kneeling man with both hands placed upon his knees. With the exception of his large lunar shaped nose ring and a cap with long straps (both articles with nicely incised details), he is nude with male genitalia presenting between spread knees. He looks straight ahead with large almond shaped eyes, a gracefully arched nose, and slightly open mouth. This visage, together with his kneeling pose, suggests that the artisan captured his subject in a worshipping or trance-like state. Fabulous example with excellent provenance. Size: 7.25" L x 5.5" W x 8.5" H (18.4 cm x 14 cm x 21.6 cm)
Provenance: Ex-private Don May (listed in Who's Who in Indian Relics) collection. Acquired in the 1970s.
