Description
PILLAR-MOLDED PINT CREAM JUG, colorless with applied ruby ribs, waisted bulbous body with eight ribs and an applied solid handle, polished pontil mark. United States or England. 1860-1880. 5 3/8" HOA, 3 1/2" D rim.
Provenance: From the collection of the late Ed Kleppinger of New Orleans, LA._x000D_
Jeffrey S. Evans and Associates, 9/26/09, lot 35._x000D_
Ex-collection of Lyn and Gordon Layton (retains collection label)._x000D_
Newtown Gallery, 4/24/86._x000D_
Exhibition: Huntington (WV) Museum of Art, no. 86, 1993.
Catalog note: The use of red to accentuate the ribs is extremely rare. We could only locate one other example, a virtually identical cream jug sold by Collector's Sales & Service, 5/13/97, lot 222. The identical nature of these two jugs would seem to indicate that they were made by the same gaffer and during the same turn.
Hard to see crack off rim at the upper handle juncture that follows the terminal and does not compromise the jug's resonance, loss of handle curl.
