Description
Pre-Columbian, modern day Costa Rica, Nicoya, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. This is a painted tripod pottery bowl with jaguar heads as the legs. The paint is red and black, and on the exterior and the interior. When conquistadors reached the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Nicoya was the largest city there, with a low pyramidal mound used for human sacrifice, plazas for markets, and special homes for elites. They have left a unique pottery style behind, as evidenced in this bowl. Size: 7" W x 4.25" H (17.8 cm x 10.8 cm).
