Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste/Nicoya region, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A fine set of 3 hand-built pottery figures from ancient Costa Rica. First is a petite zoomorph, perhaps a coatimundi, standing upon 4 nubbin legs while displaying black-painted decorations of curvilinear and stippled motifs. Next is a seated anthropomorphic figure with dense black and red decorations as well as a bulbous head bearing large almond-shaped eyes. The largest female figure sits with outstretched legs and has perky breasts, hands held atop her thighs, and a piercing stare beneath a backswept coiffure. Both the zoomorph and the largest figure exhibit openwork holes, perhaps to be used as rattles at one time. Size of largest: 4" W x 4.5" H (10.2 cm x 11.4 cm)

All 3 pieces have minor nicks, abrasions, and light fading to surface pigment, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to overall forms. Great craquelure to pigment on largest figure.
