Description
South Italian, ca. 4th century BCE. This is a circular ceramic plate decorated with the head of a lady of fashion wearing a saccos (headscarf), earrings and necklace. The plate has a round flat foot. The black decoration has gained some slight iridescence, particularly on the bottom. This plate follows the "plain" (vs. "ornate") style of Apulian redware and the female head is one of the major subjects of Apulian redware painting. Most of these painted heads are of women in the process of preparing for their wedding ceremony. Size: 5.2" W x 1.2" H (13.2 cm x 3 cm).
