Description
Russian, Late 19th/Early 20th century. Collection of two hand painted miniature icons with silvered covers, each depicting the "Unexpected Joy of the Most Holy Theotokos" with chased silver riza or oklad (one with marked with 84 zolotnik and additional mark, presumably for maker or city of manufacture, the other unmarked). Pierced sections of oklad showing hand painted on wood icon with a sinful penitent figure kneeling in prayer beside the altar or room of the Virgin Mary as recorded in the writings of St. Dimitri of Rostov. Each measures approximately 2" x 1.8".
