Description
An antique Russian Orthodox travel icon of the Mother of God Unexpected Joy. The mixed media icon with egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The icon is overlaid with an 84 gilt Silver and enamel oklad or riza, adorned with chased and engraved detailed patterns. Inscribed in Church Slavonic, lower right. Marked with an 84 standard Silver hallmark, and a makers mark. The iconography of this revered image of the Mother of God arose under the influence of the story of the miraculous vision of a sinner, described by St. Demetrius of Rostov in the essay Irrigated Fleece, 1683. The Russian people loved this incident so much that an icon called Unexpected Joy was painted in his memory. Russian Religious Icons, Travel Wares, and Silver Accessories For Collectors.
