Item Details

Description

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. Two attractive terracotta vessels from the Chancay culture of Peru. First, a piece likely inspired by a cactus, gourd, or some other phytomorphic form as its body is dramatically covered with applied spike forms. Its twin handles bridging the cylindrical neck to the shoulders are incised to give the appearance of twisted rope twin strap handles. The round bottomed body shows generous remains of a cream hued slip. Next, we have a vessel of a similar form with a rounded bottom, twin strap handles that bridge the cylindrical necks to shoulders, rounded bases, but rather than the spiky phytomorphic motif, the surface boasts a bichrome black and white finish with textile motifs running vertically down the exterior walls and sinous and straight lines adorning the handles and spout respectively. A wonderful pair! Size: larger spiked vessel measures 7.25" W x 8.75" H (18.4 cm x 22.2 cm)
