Item Details
Description
Roman, probably produced in North Africa, ca. 3rd century CE. This is a large, intact redware slip plate with a stamped design around the center of the interior, a pronounced rim/lip, and no foot. The stamps are of round objects and feet; the feet are known as planta pedia (singular planta pedis). The second letter stamped appears to be a "T"; unfortunately I cannot read the first letter. These were common maker's marks. This is an example of Roman "fine ware", the term used by archaeologists to serve food and drink at the table. This style with the stamped designs is classic of North African redware, which was exported throughout the Roman Empire. Size: 12" W x 1.9" H (30.5 cm x 4.8 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Private New Jersey collection acquired before 1990
