Description
Roman, probably produced in North Africa, ca. 3rd century CE. This is a large, intact redware slip plate with a stamped leaf leaf and spiral design around the center of the interior and no foot. This is an example of Roman "fine ware", the term used by archaeologists to serve food and drink at the table. This style with the stamped designs is classic of North African redware, which was exported throughout the Roman Empire -- there are even examples from the Roman Fort of Gellygaer in Glamorgan, Wales. Even small decorated fragments of these ancient plates are highly desired; to have such a large, intact example is a rare opportunity! Size: 12" W x 1.6" H (30.5 cm x 4.1 cm)
