Description
Rome, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. This is a small cast bronze spout in the form of a head with "African" features -- tightly curled hair is the clear identifier. The Romans were well aware of black Africans, having contact with them through Nubia, south of Egypt, but artistic depictions of them are quite rare. Size: 1.9" L x 1.8" W (4.8 cm x 4.6 cm)
