Item Details
Description
Roman, 3rd to 4th century CE. This is a single-sided bone comb carved in sunken relief. It was likely made from a single piece of bone, with hand cut teeth. Bone combs were used by middle class women; this one, decorated with a swan, reminds us of the myth of Leda and the Swan, which seems to have been borrowed from the Greeks and hugely popular amongst the Romans. Size: 2.3" W x 1.75" H (5.8 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private French Collection
