Late Roman / Byzantine Wood Comb
Item Details
Description
Roman, Late Imperial Period to early Byzantine Empire, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A slender, double-sided hair comb that is hand-carved from a rectangular panel of caramel-hued wood. Each end of the comb bears the profile of an archer's bow - with a bulging center flanked by a pair of flared flanges - and both are connected via a central bar. The tines on one side are much wider and less numerous than those on the opposite side. The larger tines would be used to comb hair as normal, and the tighter tines were perhaps used for removing lice as was a regular practice in antiquity. Size: 3.6" L x 2.375" W (9.1 cm x 6 cm); 4.125" H (10.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-prominent Daryl Kulok collection, New York, USA acquired in the 2000s
