Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, West Coast Sumatra or Jambi area, Bengkulu, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A geometric, stylized rendering of an enigmatic human figure with a blank, featureless visage, carved from deep hued wood, upon a silver base incised with geometric motifs. The origins of this form are somewhat mysterious; however, some experts believe that it portrays Durga, Shiva's consort who according to legend conceals or veils her face in order to avoid torturing those who look at her. Still other scholars deem the form to be a crowned figure with the typically folded arms and squatting stance. For a similar example, see
