Julius Heinrich Bissier
Julius Heinrich Bissier was born in Freiburg. He began to study at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe in 1914 but had to drop it a few months later due to induction to military service. Bissier’s early painting in the style of New Objectivity changed by his friendship with the sinologist Ernst Grosse, who introduced him to East Asian art. His work became increasingly abstract, composed of meditative character-like shapes. From 1945 on a brush painting with scriptlike ornamental structure originated that is reminiscent of East Asian brush and ink drawings. Works by Julius Heinrich Bissier can be found in the collections of German museums, such as the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, the Hagenauer Museum or the Museum of Contemporary Art in Freiburg.
