Fritz Winter (1905-1976)

1905 born in Altenbögge Fritz Winter completed for a start an apprenticeship as a pit electrician. In 1924 he began to paint and applied successfully to the Bauhaus in Dessau in 1927, where he studied the following three years. In 1931 he took up a lectureship at the Pädagogische Akademie in Halle, from which he was withdrawn already in 1933 after the Nazi came to power. In 1939 he was drafted into the army, was wounded several times and released from Russian captivity not before 1949. Immediately after his return, he and six other artists founded the group ZEN 49, which used a form of abstract language and wanted to bring modern forms of artistic expression home to a wide audience. In 1955 he was appointed to a professorship at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Kassel, a position he held until his retirement in 1970. He received many awards and honors. (fea)
